Everyone knows I love to eat. I am infamous for my fondness for Chicken Fried Steak, Chinese Food, Beer, Bar-B-Q, Steak, and especially Hamburgers.

Well one day I got to thinking: “Maybe I should make a list of the places I like most”, So I have. Introducing the Top 5 (used to be Top 10, but some people to remain nameless have moaned that it’s too many choices, so now it’s Top 5 with Honorable Mentions) places in the Houston area for:

  • Chicken Fried Steak
  • Chinese Food
  • Beer
  • Bar-B-Q
  • Steak
  • Hamburgers
  • Breakfast
  • Fajitas

Note: These lists are not really in any particular order, i.e. #1 on the list is not necessarily better than #3. These are just the ten best, in my gastric opinion.

Okay, I’ve started putting in other parts of the site as a sort of CMS into the blog. Don’t understand what that means? Neither do I. J/K, basically I am adding in other static pages into the site using the blog interface. I learned how to do it here.

Here’s the first one: Brian’s Food Top 5’s for Houston
Also did: Houston Spy Cameras (note: for some reason the side menu on this page is displaced in IE, it’s moved way down, and I don’t know why)
And a start on: About

Other things to be added this way:

  • Trips & Photos Page
  • Wedding Page

I’ll be adding in other static pages also, but not in the blog format, like my Texas PI Resource page.

  1. Fuddruckers- Corporate but tasty, but also pricey too.
  2. Barnaby’s - great burgers and boat load of fries. My preferred one is the Hickory Burger - comes with ham on top and hickory BBQ sauce.
  3. Goode Company Taqueria - Kirby just south of 59. Great tasting. Similar to Fuuds. Great O-rings.
  4. Red Robin - Gourmet burgers with a near gourmet price. Damn tasty and you get bottomless steak fries with them. I like the Peppercorn, Hawaiin, and Whiskey River burgers.
  5. Chili’s - Have a few good ones, big enough that you need a knife, but they don’t seem as good as they were a few years ago.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Langfords - a hole in the wall off Taft north of westheimer. Old fashion diner burgers.
  • Whataburger - one of only 2 fast food places on this list. Cooked as you order and the fries and catchup, with a malt, make the day. Oh, they still fry their apple pies like McD’s used to. Delicious and a Texas Tradition.
  • Wendy’s - my other Fast Food entry. There’s just something about the taste of a Wendy’s burger. Feels real and not processed. I am disappointed that they discontined the Texas Double Cheese Burger they had for 99 cents for a few years.
  • Cue’s - Burgers like you used to get in old roadside cafes. Crinkly fries too.
  • Original New Orleans Po-Boy - on Main between Downtown and 59. Good, greasy, and something you’d expect to see in the Honeymooners or I Love Lucy. Only open during the week for lunches though.

Places that were on this list a few years ago but have fallen off:

  • McDonalds - Ever since they killed the styro containers, then started cooking them in a press machine and storing the cooked burger patties in trays in a heater, the taste has plumetted.
  • Burger King - Is it me, or does the “flame broiled” flavor seem fake now? Even their new “Angus” one.

  1. Buffalo Grill - Pancakes, Biscuits & Gravy & Bacon are all killers.
  2. Avalon Dinner -
  3. Cue’s - (S Post Oak just south of the SW corner of loop 610). Bargain prices, home cooked style, friendly multi-ethnic & multi-class atmosphere. I love their #3 (2 biscuits, cream gravy, 2 pork sausage patties). Mamma Cue is there most days.
  4. Telwinks - Just up telephone road inside the loop from stubbs. a truck stop like diner, great breakfast.
  5. Langford - Behind Texas Junk Emporium, North of Westheimer. Chris’ favourite place, and damn good. Cheap too.

Honorable Mention:

  • Baby Barnaby’s - limited menu, but tasty.

  1. Cafe Adobe -
  2. Pappasitas - with dipping butter
  3. Original Ninfa’s on Navigation -
  4. La Michiocana - You buy the meat raw, uncut and seasoned and cook it yourself. Yum.
  5. Pablano’s - Meyer Park (Next to Fu’s Garden - see chinese above) - This is proof that I don’t have these listed in order, or else it would be #1. Their fajitas are tenderized in some mysterious liquid that must include pineapple and lime. Excuisitly tastey!

Honorable Mention:

  • La Tiempo -
