I’ve temporarily turned off comments to the blog. I have to figure out a way to stop a comment/trackback spammer from using this blog. So far he’s been trying to get through with about 50-60 messages a day.

UPDATE: Comments are back on (hopefully). I’ve done some creative editing to block the spamming robot and it seems to be working. We’ll see.

UPDATE 2: Nope, the things I tried did not work. Got about 60-70 more spams since then.
I’ll be redoing the site sometime this week (or weekend) with a newer version of WP (the blogging software), and hopefully that will help.

Added Ads Ad Nauseum

You’ve seen them elsewhere on the net, now you’ll see them here, maybe.

I’ve joined Google’s ad program and the page now has ads on the left side below the menu. They are not obtrusive, so it shouldn’t bother most of you.

I will be upgrading this page soon to a new format and program (Wordpress 1.5), and the ads may become a little more visible then.

Internet Poker

I still get lot’s of comment spam on this site for Internet Poker & Texas Hold ‘em.

Comment Spam is when they post a comment like y’all can do, but fill it with spam like you get in your email.

99% of it is never seen by you though, since I have a pretty good set of filters that “catch” the spam and won’t let it show unless I approve it. Needless to say, I don’t approve it.

If one does show up, I urge you not to visit the links they provide. Don’t make those immoral bastards win your page views.

If you WANT to play poker online, try Yahoo’s game areas. They have free poker rooms where you can play against others. You’ll occassionally find me there (usually with the name Steelsun).

Comment Spam Redux

Well, I have someone trying to spam my site again, all day today (about a dozen total). This one’s a pirate/offshore drug company, and they are too stupid to realize any post with multiple links usually gets hidden from view and awaiting moderation.

I think I’ll add a new bit of code soon, like the one seen here: http://www.syndic8.com/~jeff/blog/index.php?p=103 , It’s a bit of verification if you want your comment to be processed. I’ll make it simple, like “2 + 3=?”

Web Update

Well the Texas Hold Em spammer is back trying again, but the comments are being caught for moderation. We’ll see how it goes.

I’ll be changing the right side picture again soon. I’ll be adding in an image of a filmstrip with panels of differant images. Hopefully it’ll be up by this weekend.

edit 11/10: It’s done. Since it’s actually a BG image, I can’t make them clickable (unless I really go at it to learn CSS positioning and coding)

Comment Spam

Posted on October 19th, 2004 by Brian.

Just had my first instances of comment spam show up. The idiot spammed my very first post which is not viewable easily. I am guessing it was a script that looked for the generic first post the WP puts up.
Still that’s stupid - no one would see it but me. It was disguised as pseudo-religious crud for a gambling site and was deleted fast (got many of them before the system even notified me of their existance in the email).

12:12PM update: they are still at it, about 1 every 10 minutes, looks like they are working through the posts, first post 1, then 2, then 3, etc.
I had to add “poker” and “god” to my spam word list, so the comments are going into the moderation que - these are not words I normally would have in my posts, so it should not be a hamper on legit comments. So if you do post a comment with either of those words in it, be aware they will be moderated and will not show immediatly. And if spam they get deleted.

1:30 PM: The spams are continuing, but are getting caught by the filter. Also tried installing a hack to disable comments on old posts ( weblog tools ) but it does not seem to be working right yet. took this code out - did not work at all.

2:50 PM: In the hour I was away from the computer - 3 more had come in. With advice from TechGnome and code from Wordpress’ Wiki we’ll see if this helps.

Edit: 10/21 2:15 PM: It’s been 2 days since I implemented the above fix, and I have not had another problem since then. Yipee.

Trying a new style/setup

Based on a template I found at http://www.webjones.org/ , here’s a new front page.

I’m munging the heck out of the CSS as I see fit. And I’ve disabled several parts I don’t like.
And Note: It’s NOT Valid XHMTL and I don’t really care. I might fix it, I might not.

As an added part: You notice there is an image at the right that is static. I will feature a new image there every couple of days. These are all images taken by myself or Dawn. I may also add on a description box for each image telling where it’s from. (For instance the Angel is part of a stained glass window from Wesley’s church in London, UK.)

About The colors: The colors of the site will change to compliment the image to the right (i.e. the background matches the wings, the post boxes match the robe)

Zoto New Publish Test

Here’s a picture I took in Yellowstone this summer. Zoto seems to have added Wordpress support, so now I’m testing it. I know it’s not XHTML compliant, but we’ll see how close it gets.
Yellowstone Falls 4

Edit Note: Well the post title does not get set right, so you have to do that by hand, and it also does not set categories. Overall it works well to get the image in here, then takes some hand editing.

Top Menu Functional

Okay, I put a new menu in after much testing (broke so many things in my other attempts).

Now I have to fix some of the pages, but at least it works.

Also have to add header images to make this page look real again.

Edit: Seems the Menu is not perfect and goes to two lines on some browsers/resolutions. Aaargh.
